Courses This Term

From January 18 to April 21, 2017, I am teaching an undergraduate course in the Department of English, Film and Theatre entitled "Telling Canadian Land".  This course examines the ways in which contemporary writers and storytellers narrate the meanings of Canadian landscapes and spaces.  We will explore the ways in which particular cultures and individuals have attached themselves to places through stories or other verbal expression.  What is the relationship between stories and belonging in the multicultural fabric of Canada?  How do people express their connections to particular landscapes?  What are the politics of doing this in a settler-colonial society that has violently displaced Indigenous peoples?  How does environmental damage affect our relationships to places? These and other questions of belonging, diaspora and ecology will be the key issues we examine throughout the course.
